AI Instead of Google: MCP and the New Visibility for Online Shops
More and more people ask AI assistants instead of Google. The Model Context Protocol (MCP) opens a direct interface to shop data — an opportunity most online merchants do not know about yet.
Anyone searching for something today increasingly asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude — and no longer turns to Google first. This changes how visibility in e-commerce works.
The classic SEO logic — optimising content for search engines, hoping for clicks in the results list — only applies in part. AI assistants give direct answers and link out less frequently. Anyone who wants to be visible there needs a different approach.
What is the Model Context Protocol?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that allows AI assistants to access structured data directly — for example a product catalogue, stock information or price lists.
Instead of searching through a text, an AI assistant with MCP integration can ask directly: "What red sneakers do you have available in size 42?" — and get an exact answer from the shop system.
Why this matters for online merchants
When AI assistants answer product enquiries directly, shops become the source of the answer — not the destination of a link. This means: anyone who opens their shop to MCP can appear directly in the answers given by AI assistants.
This is still an early phase today, but the trend is clear. Companies that implement an MCP interface now are building a structural advantage.
First steps
The technical implementation of MCP for an existing shop is not a mammoth project. It requires a structured API that delivers product data, prices and availability in machine-readable form — and an MCP server that makes this data access available to AI assistants.
